Planting Trees On
Cocoa Farms
We’re supporting cocoa-farming families to plant forest and fruit trees by contributing to the distribution of more than 1 million trees a year to support biodiversity on cocoa farms.
Your break is part of an innovative program in West Africa that supports cocoa-farming families by increasing their incomes, planting trees, and helping kids into school.
Through the program, cocoa-farming families are supported in planting and caring for native forest and fruit trees, which create shade for the cocoa trees and promote biodiversity on cocoa farms.
Cocoa-farming families can earn up to €250 for pruning and agroforestry activities. Half of this is paid upfront when families commit to these activities, and the remaining half after verification that one hectare has been pruned.
Mobile money cash transfers are distributed equally between both heads of the family to encourage gender equity, share financial responsibilities, and build more resilient* households.
The results in 2024 (see the latest progress report summary of the Nestlé income accelerator program, as well as the Nestlé Cocoa Plan for more details):
- 556 220 native trees planted through the program in 2024. These come from the 1 737 740 forest and fruit trees seedling distributed through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan
- 71% of participating farms now have shade trees (up from 52% in 2022)
Your break is helping build more resilient* cocoa farms.
So far, the program has reached 30 000 cocoa-farming families in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, moving to 50 000 families by 2026 with the ambition to reach an estimated 160 000 by 2030. More information is available in the latest progress report summary of the Nestlé income accelerator program.
*Resilience is defined as the ability to adapt and recover from adversities – such as poor agroclimatic conditions, volatile cocoa prices, and rising living costs.
